Windows 7 Gets Fake Fixes

Microsoft plans to assess the update mechanism of its latest OS by giving users 10 fake updates to Windows 7 Release Candidate.

This is Microsoft's second attempt to deliver bogus updates on Windows 7. In February, five fake patches were released.

According to Microsoft spokesman Brandon LeBlanc, users of WIndows 7 RC will be prompted with mock updates on May 12. Leblanc explains the release aims to "verify our ability to deliver and manage updating of Windows 7 in certain real-life scenarios."

The bogus updates will not patch any flaws, but alter existing system files with identical copies. The latest fixes wll install automatically unlike the ones released last February. Users will also need to access Windows Update and manually install the updates that are not installed automatically. To reject the updates, settings must be changed by choosing another update installation option. Users can then right click on the fake update and can choose to hide it.
