UK Government Looks Into Using Smart Ticketing
The UK government has plans to speed up the progress of smart ticketing as announced by new transport secretary Lord Andrew Adonis. The system is said to be widely implemented across the country.Adonis stated in his speech at the Transport Times conference, “By extending the use of smart ticketing technology, we can transform people’s perception and experience of public transport."
Adonis further noted the success of London’s Oyster smartcard which is used for Tube, bus and train travel. The technology is also being bundled with a Barclaycard for low-value contactless payments in several London shops.
The Department of Transport (DfT) will conduct a research that would prove the feasibility of the ticketing technology. It has already declared its intention to shell out for a project to ensure the compatibilitty of Oyster with ITSO smartcard standard, a system popularly used in the UK.
