Firefox recently released TraceMonkey, a project that adds native code compilation to SpiderMonkey, to compete with Microsoft’s Silverlight and Adobe Flash. Tracemonkey is featured in Firefox 3.1, the updated version of the Firefox browser which will soon be introduced.
Tracemonkey is designed to significantly speed up Firefox’ Javascript performance. It is a Just-In-Time (JIT) JavaScript compiler that will eventually replace Firefox’s current SpiderMonkey JavaScript compiler. According to its developers, the kind of JavaScript performance made possible with TraceMonkey could one day eliminate the need for proprietary plug-ins such as Adobe’s Flash and Microsoft’s SilverLight in order for sites to incorporate highly interactive content such as web-based graphics editors.
