Key people at software giant Microsoft are looking into widely using Open Web technology. Microsoft Office 14 beta version is due for release this year, which aims to bring the best of Microsoft’s core product to the web.

Microsoft is also propping up its Silverlight plug-in, one of the best tools for creating rich web applications. Brad Becker group product manager for rich client platforms at, once said in an interview last year, "I would use Silverlight any place starting new.  How many shops out there have the Ajax chops that Google does?"

Silverlight is more straightforward when it comes to programming and the plug-in offers highly polished results.  Hence, the Office 14 will be built on JavaScript, with elective Silverlight-based attributes created for those who have the plug-in.

With these recent updates, Microsoft hopes to strike some balance between regular and web-based office programs.  Microsoft, however, is relying on the desktop software as its focal offering despite the free web services.
