Intel Set to Launch 6-Core Xeon Processor in September
Intel will be replacing the widely-used quad-core chips with 6-core Xeon processor in September. Pat Gelsinger, senior vice president and general manager of Intel Corp.’s Digital Enterprise, has revealed the company’s plan to offer “Dunnington” in the market. Dunnington will be built with Intel’s new 45-nanometer Penryn technology designed to speed up performance.Intel’s rival, AMD, is also set to release its own 6-core Istanbul server processor, but this will be at a much later date than Intel’s targeted schedule. Intel has the advantage of time and a long-standing reputation of offering products of first-rate quality; thus, making it more possible to again top the chip market comes September. The only problem facing the company is how to infuse interest in 6-core machines among buyers given the quad-core features they are already enjoying.
