IBM To Build Web-Collaboration Platform

IBM is now building a web-conferencing platform that enables users to pool resources through web page with audio and video functions.

The new platform, dubbed as OpusUna, is named after the Latin expression for "work together" or "work as one."  It is an AJAX-based technology which allows participants to search and combine multimedia and data feeds, resize and view windows, and jump in and out of sessions without a special hardware server or software. OpusUna is designed to let participants jump in and out of sessions without a special hardware server or software.

In addition, OpusUna is based on  Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP), an XML-based specification for presence and real-time communication employed to control messaging, presence, chat, and voice and video calls.  Its server draws on an Apache container, and web pages are created with the use of JavaScript, CSS and HTML.

IBM plans to introduce the platform to customers in early 2009 before plumping for its next big step.
