Firefox 3.1 Set to Use Ogg video and Audio
Firefox 3.1, also known as Shiretoko, is said to being developed to use Ogg video and audio from the Xiph.org Foundation and the Ogg Theora Video Codec. This would enable web browsers such as Mozilla Firefox to employ built-in codecs instead of using proprietary add-ons such as Apple's QuickTime, Adobe's Flash, or Microsoft's Silverlight.Firefox 3.1 was originally planned to include support for the <video> and <audio> tags as defined in the HTML 5 specification. However, W3C or the World-Wide Web Consortium backed down from from its plan to default codec for its planned <video> and <audio> tags in HTML 5.
According to some key developers of Mozilla, Firefox 3.1 will test Ogg Vorbits audio and Ogg Theora video support as defaults for the new HTML5 elements on its early stages of release.
