Atom Successor Set for Release Next Year

Intel's newest roadmap discloses that Atom successor, dubbed as Pineview, is set for release in the third quarter next year. Pineview will integrate a graphics engine and memory controller directly into the chip itself rather than leave them as discrete components.  One of the significant revisions to be made in the chip will be its size, which will be much smaller than Atom.  Performance is also expected to boost as the time to transfer data from the processor to other parts of the system will be substantially reduced.

Pineview will possibly scrounge a few  Nehalem innovations, and integrate a DDR2 memory controller and graphics core into the die itself.  The chip is still not confirmed to appear in netbooks and is most likely to be featured in desktop machines.  Few other details are available in Intel's roadmap, though Pineview will still be in one- and two-core models and will support Hyperthreading to manage at most four separate program threads at a time.
