According to IT analysts, the deployment of Intel's Atom processor in netbooks may undermine sales of its more advanced chips.

Atom chips are less-expensive processors intended for use in ultra-mobile PCs, smart phone and other portable and low-power applications. Intel's latest addition to its wide array of processors is currently being used in laptops with small screens, loaded with networking and multimedia features.

Tablet PCs were dominated by Celeron processors, but the emergence of Atom chips could dent the sales of Celeron and other higher-end processors. With the ongoing financial setbacks, users have the propensity to choose low-priced PCs packed with Atom chips.

Based on IDC study, Atom distribution is anticipated to take a leap in the forthcoming months despite the current worldwide recession. IDC also noted that Atom shipments showed good numbers during the previous quarter, accounting to five million units.
