Analyst Encourages Microsoft to Offer Free Windows 7 Upgrade

According to analyst Michael Cherry, Microsoft should offer Windows Vista Ultimate users free upgrade to Windows 7.

"I'd like to see a free upgrade [to Windows 7] for Vista Ultimate users. It would buy them a lot of good will, and I don't think it would cost them much," Cherry said.

Cherry claims Microsoft failed to provide the features promised in "Ultimate Extras", thus the need for the firm to recompense its Ultimate users.

Microsoft highlighted Ultimate Extras as a distinguishing factor of high-end Vista when it introduced the OS early 2007. Microsoft described the package to boast "cutting-edge programs, innovative services and unique publications."  This, however, did not materialize leaving users clamoring for better upgrade.

Microsoft took the criticisms into consideration and decided to drop the concept from Windows 7's Ultimate edition. A spokesman from the company said, "Our new approach to planning and building Windows doesn't have the capacity to continue to deliver features outside the regular release cycle."

Cherry's free upgrade proposition would be welcomed by some Ultimate users. Microsoft, on the other hand, has not commented on the suggestion as of yet.
