AMD's "Shanghai" Processor to Challenge Intel
Advance Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) recently announced its release of 45-nanometer Shanghai processor later this year. It is designed to contend Intel’s Nehalem processor especially in the volume two socket server market. According to the company, it will contain 6MB of Level 3 cache which is much higher than their current line of processors.AMD’s Senior Vice President expressed the company’s intent to bring Shanghai processor in the market competing that of Intel. This also means that various OEM partners of AMD will have early systems for sale by the end of 2008.
Intel’s Nehalem processor has not been released, but it is perceived to be in close competition with what AMD has to offer. Both processors are for two-socket servers and both are also expected to be released in the same timeframe. Intel is AMD’s former partner and these two companies have a long history of litigations which will definitely be rekindled once Shanghai and Nehalem will be out in the market.
