UK Government Tosses Out Data Sharing Plan
UK's data sharing plan has been written off by the government following numerous criticisms thrown agains its author,Justice minister Jack Straw. The plan is an amendment to the existing Data Protection Act, and a legislation that would allow the use of data Sharing Orders voiding the regulations of DPA.
Straw was pushing to include the data sharing plan in the Coroners and Justice Bill which are currently being tackled in the House of Commons. However, Straw announced the significant provisions have been phased out to allow further discussions.
Straw explained, "Absolutely no part of the purpose of this legislation was to extend a Big Brother society - quite the reverse - but I understand people's anxiety. I have never had a piece of legislation that was not improved by public debate during its passage through parliament."
Straw os slated to request for a public consultation from the Information Commissioner so public groups can share their thoughts and arrive at a more beneficial legislation.
