Twitter has revealed how it would combat the growing problem of fake profiles set up by cyber squatters.

Twitter's prominent account holders have suffered reputation losses because of bogus accounts made using their identities, and publishing malicious or inaccurate posts.

The micro-blogging site plans to launch a beta version of its Verified Accounts to a small number of users.

Twitter co-founder Biz Stone posted in a blog, "Please note that this doesn't mean accounts without a verification seal are fake. The vast majority of Twitter accounts are not impersonators."

"The experiment will begin with public officials, public agencies, famous artists, athletes and other well known individuals at risk of impersonation," Stone added.

Businesses affected by Twitter's current problem include Sainsbury and South West Trains.
