Thailand Blocks 400 Web Sites

Thailand government tries to shut down some 400 web sites considered as threats to national security and social order.  ISP's were also advised to block access to another 800 sites for the same grounds. These websites are alleged to have violated the 2007 Computer Crime Act.

Conseguently, a Thai court issued three orders to shut down about 400 websites, by which 344 are cited of carrying materials deemed contemptuous of the country's royal family. The other blocked websites included two with religious content, one video sex game and five sites believed to be having obscene content.

A state of emergency was announced following several  street demonstrations, in which one person was killed and 45 were injured. Thousands of people rallied in opposition to the government's move and calling for Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej's resignation. Samak deployed the army to restore order on the streets of Bangkok after fighting started between his supporters and those trying to throw his government out.
