Microsoft Under Taiwan Antitrust Investigation
Microsoft Under Taiwan Antitrust Investigation
Microsoft faces another challenge as it battles an investigation conducted by Taiwan’s Fair Trade Commission. The company is said to hold a monopoly position over Taiwan’s software market and is accused of abusing such position. The ongoing investigation also includes complaints on how Microsoft limits its consumer choices by restricting the availability of Windows XP on new PC’s and whether the company is giving reasonable prices to its products.Microsoft will be facing a fine of up to NT$25 million (US$797,361) should it be found guilty of such violations. The investigation sparked when several consumers complained that they were forced to buy Windows Vista and were told not to buy Windows XP.
Microsoft controls 98% of Taiwan’s OS market share as the island doesn’t have it’s own operating system.
