IT Women on Maternity Leave Face Major Chalenges

According to Women in Technology director Maggie Berry, IT women on maternity leave fear they might face major challenges upon returning to work. Berry said this is still the biggest problem women in the IT industry are concerned about, outplacing other challenges like discrimination in a world dominated by men.
 

"The technology industry moves so fast that time off can have a huge impact on your career," Berry said.

 

Berry claims that despite the government's effort to secure the place of women in IT, it is still worthless if these women lack the appropriate skills that companies need. 

 

"It costs a lot of money to train up again in a specific area of IT, and not a lot of women can afford it," Berry added.

 

Berry suggested a scheme that would ensure women who have been on maternity leave to have their job back.

 

"At the end of the maternity programme, if women did not want to apply for a position at the company, or were turned down, at least they had the confidence to apply elsewhere," Berry explained.
