Data Centers Need to Promote Green IT, Gartner Says

According to analyst firm Gartner, there is a rising need for data center managers to streamline their operations to save energy costs.

Traditional data centers are significantly outmoded when it comes to ecologically balanced IT, Gartner says. Rakesh Kumar, vice-president at Gartner noted, "If we assume that data center energy costs continue to double every five years, they will have increased 1,600 percent between 2005 and 2025."

Data centers ought to focus on power efficiency, as well as waste management, asset management, technology architecture, capacity management, support services, energy sources and operations to maintain environmental stability. Kumar suggested six major ways to establish an efficient data center - choosing location carefully; developing the site modularly; including chillers and high ventilation air conditioning units; introducing alternative energy sources; installing monitoring tools; and investigating 'powering down' equipment.

In addition, the Symantec Green Data Center Report stated that firms are toiling to adopt tactical green data center schemes.  Kumar agreed with the results, asserting that while business organizations invest in green data centers, most of them do not commit financial support; thus making it hard to gain full advantage.
