AMD Sells Digital TV Group to Broadcom

Advance Micro Devices has decided to sell out its TV-chip unit to Broadcom for $192.8 million.  Broadcom is getting 530 AMD employees out of the deal and AMD's considerable experience in the digital TV chipset game, which will become the "core" of Broadcom's line in that market.  Meanwhile, the deal enables AMD to unload a piece of its ill-fated $5.4 billion acquisition of ATI as it converges on trimming down its manufacturing operations.
According to Broadcom, the DTV acquisition will enable the company to instantly balance its DTV business from low-end to mid-range to high-end interactive platforms and panel processors. The product transfer also comprises of complete turnkey reference designs, NXT receiver ICs, the Theater 300 DTV processor, and a family of panel processors. The deal is expected to be closed by the end of this year.
