A new report claimed that the establishment of generic top-level domains (TLDs) could cause an internet disaster if implemented inappropriately.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) recently imposed a new policy on internet domains, allowing those who can afford to create their own generic TLD. This was negatively assessed by The Future Laboratory’s report, which argued that majority of internet users will not benefit from ICANN’s move and it will only result to nonsensical domains. The Future Laboratory represented Gandi.net, European domain registrar.
The report also discussed intellectual property and brand name issues, as well as the possible growth of contentious domains.
Tom Savigar of The Future Laboratory said, "Consumers and businesses alike are confused and worried."
"There is no clear sense of who is in charge at the moment, and who should be in charge going forward. As a result, the liberalisation of domain names, which is meant to encourage greater choice and diversity, is seen instead as being a daunting change to the internet."
