ISPs Take the Heat for False Claims on Broadband Speed
According to Ofcom, internet service providers are overstating their broadband speeds on advertisements. Ofcom’s research revealed that UK broadband subscribers are getting much slower speed than promoted by ISPs.Most of broadband providers claim to have 7.1Mbit/s speed, however Ofcom’s report stated the actual average in April 2009 only reached 4.1Mbit/s.
Backing Ofcom’s report, Broadband Genie editor Chris Marling, said, "People may be disappointed to see an average real broadband speed of less than half the 'up to' speed advertised by their ISP, but in truth what the consumer experiences is even worse.”
"Comparing the Ofcom results to our own, we estimate that the actual speed customers get to work with is often between 50 and 75 per cent of that quoted here, which could be 1Mbit/s to 2Mbit/s slower," Marling added.
Marling’s findings was even worse than that of Ofcom’s. The firm’s tests excluded Wi-Fi connection delays and computer issues.
