The US government has been urged by the regional internet registries (RIRs) to take ICANN out of its direct administration. ICANN is presently administering the internet Domanin Name System (DNS) along with the US Department of Commerce. Come September 30, the agreement expires which will give the government an option to allow ICANN in functioning privately.
"We didn’t confer with each other, we seen several ideas from the EU, some of which that we thought we were good, but there’s no question of this being coordinated in any way,” said European RIR, RIPE NCC managing director Axel Pawlik.
Pawlik maintained everyone in RIRs believe ICANN should work as a separate body from the government. He then explained that the department has no qualms on how ICANN was managed. He even appeared doubtful the government would give ICANN up so easily.
"They asked for comments and we’ve made our views known. But even with the change of administration, I can’t see them loosening that control," Pawlik explained.
