File Sharers Won't Be Disconnected

In response to the Joint Committee on Human Rights which was worried about the fact that the Government's proposals to illegal file-sharers without IT connectivity from their IT services providers could breach internet users' human rights, the Government made some decisions.  One of these important decisions is that persistent file-sharers won't be left without this IT service as a punishment to illegal acts.

The statement made by the Government is in fact defending the measures incorporated in the Digital Economy and also saying that disconnecting file-sharers would be a possibility only in criminal cases. The statement says that "we will not terminate the accounts of infringers – it is very hard to see how this could be deemed proportionate except in the most extreme – and therefore probably criminal – cases. The increasing role of the internet in access to society should not be underestimated. Cutting off households deprives families of education, government services and freedom of speech."
