Chinese Web Users Plan to Boycott the Internet
Web users across China are planning to ban the internet for a day as a protest to the country's Green Dam filtering tool. The Chinese government is directing all computer manufacturers to integrate the Green Dam filtering tool with their computer packages. Lead by architect Ai Weiwei, protesters are urging Chinese web users to log off from the internet on July 1. Ai Weiwei is a known critic of the government.
The government claims the software is designed to filter out pornographic materials, but analysts maintain it will expand the state's control over users' web access and monitor their browsing activities. The business sector also fears that the legislation would lead to legal debate and export issues.
