BT has started rolling out UK’s very first fibre-optic network, as drafted in Lord Carter’s Digital Britain report.
BT will be testing two locations, Muswell Hill in North London, and Whitchurch near Cardiff. Among the internet service providers participating in Openreach’s new optical fibre-based access product are BT Wholesale, Carphone Warehouse, O2 and Sky. With the pilot operation, 15,000 areas will get to enjoy the new service. Around 100 street cabinets owned by BT will become fibre-enabled.
Openreach will be providing the Generic Ethernet Access over Fibre to the Cabinet (GEA-FTTC), which will support BT’s trial connection. It has a maximum of 40Mbit/s download and a standard upload speed of 2Mbit/s.
