Broadband Internet Connections to Reach 500 Million
According to a new research from Futuresource Consulting, broadband internet connections across the globe will stretch to 500 million by 2010. The firm said DSL remains to be the world's most popular connection. Around 60 percent of residents have phone-line broadband connection, and only 20 percent have cable internet.Japan and South Korea were found to have the fastest broadband speeds at 30Mbit/s, while the US trails behind at 2.7Mbit/s.
Futuresource sees emerging markets to incur significant growth in broadband connections rather than the already developed nations.
Futuresource senior market analyst Patrik Pfandler said, "Although markets in many developed countries are becoming saturated, alternative hotspots are starting to emerge. Our research shows that Africa and the Middle East will experience spikes this year that equate to 33 per cent growth."
"Longer term, India is the country to watch out for over the next four years. With one of the lowest household penetration rates for fixed broadband at the moment, at just over two per cent, or five million subscribers, the market is projected to grow five-fold by 2013, to almost 25 million lines," Pfander further explained.
