AT&T To Regulate Monthly Internet Traffic

America's largest internet service provider is considering the idea of keeping a tight rein on the amount of data its customers can utilize per month. The company will be pioneering the scheme in Reno, Nevada.

ISPs across the US are progressively setting a maximum threshold on the data users can upload and download each month. This aims to control a few subscribers who use up a lot of the network capacity. However, such restrictions are only temporary.

By November. AT&T will impose a monthly bandwidth cap of 20 GB for subscribers of its slowest DSL package. The limit increases based on the internet speed a customer is getting per month, amounting up to 150 GB. To go beyond the limit, customers would be required to download constantly at maximum speeds for over 42 hours, depending on the tier. The company's website displays its customers' bandwidth usage.

AT&T will be trying out the initiative in the Reno area wherein existing users wil be enrolled if they go over 150 gigabytes in a month, irrespective of their connection speed.
