  1. New Storage Encryption Standards
    The Trusted Computing Group (TCG) has put forward specifications for three new storage encryption standards. The specifications outline encryption standards for storage in PCs and datacentres along with a third proposed standard for the SCSI and ATA protocols used by hard disks and other storage systems.

  3. Emergency Passport System To Go Ahead
    The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is introducing a new system that will issue more secure emergency travel documents. The system will be rolled out from the second half of this year and will allow officials at 200 overseas stations to issue the documents within a matter of hours.

  4. Intel Consolidates European Research
    Intel is to reorganise its European research division under the banner of the Intel Labs Europe (ILE) project. The initial focus of research will cover visual computing, software development, enterprise solutions, green computing, advanced microprocessor research and high-performance computing.

    ILE will be headed up by Dr Martin Curley, global director of IT services innovation at Intel, and professor of technology and business innovation at the National University of Ireland in Maynooth.

  5. Dell To Launch A Line Of Smartphones
    Online reports suggest that the smartphones will be based on Google’s Android platform and Microsoft’s Windows Mobile. However, sources said that the plans are not finalised and that the company may yet change its mind.

  6. Nortel Closes Mobile WiMax BusinessTelecoms firm Nortel has announced today that it is to discontinue its mobile WiMax business. Nortel is in the process of restructuring after filing for bankruptcy last year.

    The company announced today that it has ended its relationship with WiMax provider Alvarion. The deal, which was announced last June, involved the integration of Nortel’s network and backhaul solutions, along with its global IT services, with Alvarion’s radio access network technology. Nortel was also able to resell Alvarion’s WiMax access products.

  7. Google Promises Offline Calendar SupportAfter announcing much requested offline IT support for Gmail, Google has now revealed that it will roll out an ‘offline enable’ tool for Google Calendar within a few weeks.

    The move signals Google’s commitment to providing more offline working capabilities, after having released offline Google Docs last year and Gmail offline IT support earlier this week.

    The search firm also announced a "flaky connection mode" this week, for instances when connection is weak and intermittent.

  8. Microsoft Enables Live Search In Firefox
    Microsoft has reasserted itself in the so-called ‘browser wars’ with the release of a new add-on for rival Mozilla’s open-source Firefox browser. The update will allow the optimised use of Microsoft Live Search from directly within Firefox.

    Version 2.0 of Microsoft’s Live Search API also supports multiple protocols including JSON, XML and Soap, as part of a project called Silk Road, whereas Google’s search API supports only Ajax.

    Data integration specialist Informatica has released positive fourth-quarter results, in an economic climate where it is fast becoming the norm for tech firms to report a significant loss.
